Exploration of Antarctica, so that The Known World

Winter in the northern hemisphere is a good time to visit Antarctica because it’s summer there. From San Francisco, you most likely will fly from Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is a beautiful city and well worth a little time before or after your visit to Antarctica. Ushuaia is your next step is the greater part of four hours by plane. This small tourist outpost on the southern tip of South America. In summer the temperature in Buenos Aires, on average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature at Ushuaia, the average is 40 degrees Fahrenheit. But the temperature is 20 degrees Fahrenheit on the Antarctic Peninsula, or less, in the summer. They experience an almost exponential decay of the farther south you go.
M / V Ushuaia – Ushuaia I arrived during a snowstorm in November 2007. Snow and sleet blowing across the runway to more than 30 miles per hour. Fortunately, I had a bridge to heaven and leave by airplane was isolated from the cold outside. After picking up my luggage, I boarded a small bus and shuttle were in Ushuaia to the docks. My ship M / V Ushuaia has been there for me and waited. I take a few minutes walk from the bus station to board the ship. This exhibition me the strength to weather and it was very cold. After a few photos I board the ship, registered, and was shown to my cabin. The room was small but sufficient for my needs and my brother who I shared. We also had the bathroom with another car-sharing, but we will talk soon with our neighbors and developed a plan.
Snowing on the Beagle Channel, after a brief speech of welcome and orientation process was a lifeboat drill. Then we ate dinner and the ship sailed on the Beagle Channel towards the open sea and the Drake Passage. The Beagle Channel was named for the ship that Charles Darwin made his journey to change the world. HMS Beagle crossed the canal en route to the Pacific to 29 Januar 1833rd
Forecast winds of 30 km / h in passing that the departure is delayed, they did not stop. The crossing of the Beagle Channel was smooth. Strong winds expected for the Drake Passage had to talk all about their medicines against evil and strategies. I had my ear-patch under to protect against this terrible disease. However, there are no drugs or procedures to ward off the disease may have to navigate through the Drake Passage, you must bear.
It takes about 2.5 days at the infamous Drake Passage from Ushuaia to cross the Antarctic Peninsula. It is well known, because these waters are reputed to be very, very big. The other phenomenon that makes the difficult journey here is that the sun never sets before 12:00 hours in November. The other influence that this trip was particularly hard as the Antarctic summer of 2007 was what the locals called a summer Shackleton. This is a reference to the unusually cold weather was Sir Ernest Shackleton Henry, the great Antarctic explorer, met on his ill-fated expedition of 1914-1917. Disaster of the expedition, when his ship HMS Endurance was trapped in ice and slowly crushed stranding the expedition in Antarctica.
The story will continue in my next article. Explore Antarctica, the Drake Passage.
